I started to pray — dredging up old Catholic prayers from my childhood — all those years of comfortable agnosticism thrown aside in my desperation and despair.

I begged whoever was listening for mercy. I offered any bargain for her returning health; any price I could pay, I would. Just please, please don’t make this happen. Not to her. Not now. Not after all this.
