Britain’s shrinking families: Women are having FEWER children and it is becoming more common to have none

  • ONS figures have laid bare the changing shape of Britain’s families 
  • Women began to put education and career over a family, and as a result they did not become mothers or had smaller families than their mothers
  • Average number of offspring has fallen to 1.91 for women born in 1970
  • One in six have reached mid-40s without having any children
