William Gairdner on the difference between conservatism and liberalism:
“[C]ivil society”, for the conservative, is like a horse pulling the cart of civilization along, stopping frequently to load it up with the free and responsible individuals it creates as it moves through history. The sickness of modern liberalism, is that it separates the cart from the horse – thinking only of the individuals in the cart, not of what makes the whole thing go forward – then shoots the horse!
